Wesley Wise Ballance, 89, a long time resident of the Engelhard community, died Monday, June 23, 2008 at Cross Creek Health Care Center. Born in Nebraska May 23, 1919, he was the son of the late Octavius C. and Martha Cohoon Ballance. He was married to the former Mary Magdalene G. Ballance who preceded him in death. At the age of 22 he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country during World War II, participated in the invasion of Normandy and the campaigns through Northern France, Rhineland, Ardenness-Alsace and Central Europe.
Mr. Wesley had a love for the outdoors, he enjoyed crabbing, hunting but most of all he loved to work with his hands, an avid farmer, carpenter and mechanic, he was a servant to his fellow man, a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
A funeral will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the family plot in Amity Church Cemetery in the Lake Landing Community; the Rev. Gerald Craddock and Pastor Valerie Ballance will officiate.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruth A. Thornton and husband Samuel of Nags Head; one son, Murray T. Ballance and wife Kathy of Engelhard; three grandchildren, Marcus Ballance and wife Heather, Erin B. Anderson and husband Mike and Caroline Ballance; one great-grandchild, Maggie Rae Ballance. A niece, Sharon Loving and husband Chuck; a great-grandniece, Callie Loving.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Watson Chapel United Methodist Church. Memorial contribution may be made to the Wesley Ballance Scholarship Fund, 422 Lazy Ln., Engelhard, NC 27824.
