Mr. James Thomas Barnes Jr. of 40 Vermont Ave., Washington, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Hebron Church of Christ with Elder Jerome Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes was born in Johnston County on March 9, 1938. He was the son of the late James Thomas Barnes Sr. and Elizabeth Kirby Barnes. He attended the Johnston County Schools and Beaufort County Community College. He was married to Velma Ward Barnes, who preceded him in death. He later married Letha Shipmon Barnes, who survives. He was a mechanic with N.C. Department of Transportation. He was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 11. He was a member of Mt. Hebron Church of Christ, where he served as chair of the deacon board, and on the pastor’s aide, beautification and sick committees.
Survivors include three daughters, Teresa Windley and Mable Barnes, both of Washington, and Ginger Barnes of Greenville; one son, James Thomas Barnes III of Greenville; four sisters, Nan Brewington of Riverdale, Calif., Liz Bell West of Minister, Calif., Delores Gibson of Long Beach, Calif., and Nancy Jones of Fayetteville; one brother, Frank Barnes of Waldorf, Md.; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Barnes.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington.
