Mr. Sidney Ward Spruill, 81, of Roper died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Zion’s Chapel Church of Christ, Roper with Mark Wilmoth officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Spruill was born in Washington County, the son of the late N. Warren and Lizzie Tarkington Spruill. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was married to Julia Juanita Waff Spruill, who preceded him in death. He worked as a millwright with Weyerhaeuser Corp. until his retirement. He was treasurer for the Roper Fire Department. He was a member of Zion’s Chapel Church of Christ, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon and elder for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Melanie S. Currie of Roper; one son, David W. Spruill of Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth S. Newberry of Tarboro and Ruth S. Schwanke of Plymouth; two brothers, Aubrey Spruill of Kensington, Md., and Jack Spruill of Roper; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy Spruill, William Spruill and John Spruill.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Maitland Memorial Chapel, Plymouth, and other times at the home.
