Mrs. Jessie Mae Southerland Ross, 88, of 4496 Kelly Road, Bath, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hillside Funeral Service, Washington, with Danny Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Ross family cemetery. Jedediah Bidwell, Jasper Wooten, Charles Foreman, Don Adams Jr., Dallas Linton and Brian Bush will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Ross was born in Rockingham County on July 25, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Myrtle Mae Nance Southerland. She was married to Bennie Roy Ross, who preceded her in death in 1995. She attended the School for the Deaf in Morganton and has been a resident of Beaufort County for about 50 years.
Survivors include her children, Alice R. Hobbs of Emporia, Va., Janice R. Jolly of Dallas, Texas, Roy Martin Ross and Betty R. Bidwell, both of the home, and Shelly R. Leighty of Pinetown; four brothers, Lawrence Martin Wooten of Ft. McCoy, Fla., James C. Wooten of Beaumont, Texas, John Lewis Wooten of Houston, Texas, and Jasper A. Wooten of Conway, S.C.; two sisters, Mary E. Wooten of Spring Valley, Utah and Helen L. Taylor of Ocala, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold E. Wooten and Frank L. Wooten.
