Mr. Gladford E. Ray Gibbs Sr., 90, of North Lake Road, Engelhard, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at Cross Creek Health Care Center.
Born in Hyde County on June 18, 1918, he was the son of the late Frank and Lydia O’Neal Gibbs. He was married to Violet Mae Gibbs, who preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gibbs family cemetery near his home. Phil Emmert will officiate.
Surviving are three sons, Raymond Roy Gibbs of Fairfield, Gladford E. Ray Gibbs Jr. of Columbia and Joseph Franklin Gibbs of Lumberton; two daughters, Caddie Lilley of Bath and Adenia Olson of Washington; two sisters, Hazel G. Pledger of Engelhard and Lila Mae Manning of Washington; half brothers and half sisters, Grace Gibbs Bell of Ayden, Cleaven Gray Gibbs of Engelhard, Curly Bradshaw Gibbs of Durham, Betty G. Cofield of Washington, Loye G. Parrish of Clayton, Benjamin Frank Gibbs, Jr. of Engelhard, Sophia G. Lynn of Raleigh, Glenda Gibbs Blinson of Clayton, David Isaiah Gibbs of Washington, Dianne G. Kaleel of Clayton, Mickel Andy Gibbs of Engelhard and Brenda Lee Gibbs of Raleigh; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, William Arvel Gibbs, William Selby Gibbs, Hilda Beasley, Frankie Gibbs, Beulah Cahoon and Melsey Gray Gibbs.
The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter, on Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and other times at the home of Roy and Ava Gibbs, 19743 N. C. Highway 94, Fairfield. Online sympathy messages may be sent to www.bryanfs.com
