Mrs. Geraldine Iris Selby Shipp, died Friday October 10, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Shipp was born June 15, 1936 in Knottingham, England. She was the second of four children, and the only girl. Iris met Ray Shipp in 1960 while he was stationed in England with the Air Force. The two were married in 1962 and came to live in the United States in 1964. Ray and Iris lived and traveled all over the U.S. and the world. Iris and Ray moved to Hyde County, Engelhard, NC in 1977. Ray Shipp continued to serve in a retired capacity at Pope Air Force Base until his death in 1984. Mrs. Shipp worked at RS General Store for approximately 10 years. Iris had most recently been living in Durham with her sister-in-law and brother-in-law while receiving treatment for cancer.
Iris had a love for the coast, water, dolphins with a great sense of humor, sense of fashion, decorating and special knack for “telling it like it was.” She will be greatly missed by all who knew her well.
She is survived by her only living brother, William Selby of Knottingham; daughter, Linda Privett; grandchildren, Niki and Lee; nephews, Jeff, Paul and Andrew all of Knottingham; brothers-in-law, Marshall Shipp and Frank Shipp of Durham, NC; sisters-in-law, Carole Shipp, Becky Shipp, and Anne Linville; nieces, Lisa Madren, Shawn Shipp, Leanne Goddard; nephew, Greg Linviile; closest friends, Dottie and Jesse Gibbs and Marge and Wally Lockyer of Engelhard, NC.
Graveside memorial services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lowes Grove Baptist Church, 4430 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713 for the care of the church’s rose garden.
The Shipp family is under the care of Howerton &Bryan Funeral Home.
