Mr. James Norfleet Matthews, 75, of 431 Farless Road, Merry Hill, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg DeMarko officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military and Masonic rites.
Mr. Matthews was born in Edgecombe County on Dec. 1, 1932. He was the son of the late Lillie Matthews. He was a retired Coast Guard master chief petty officer, AD and a veteran of Korean and Vietnam wars. He was married to Ruth Hughes Matthews, who survives. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason at Eureka Lodge No. 317 in Elizabeth City. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include two sons, Alan of Chocowinity and John of Merry Hill and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Matthews’ memory to the Riverside Baptist Church building fund.
