It was one of the most memorable plays in the history of Washington Pam Pack basketball.
Washington was trailing Northern Nash, 50-49 in the final seconds of the 1972 Region North championship game on the campus of East Carolina University, when Pam Pack coach Glen Korobov called a timeout to set up one final play.
With 6’4” center Fred Jones manning the middle, Korobov called for a set play to get Jones the ball in the low post.
But Northern Nash keyed on Washington’s big fellow, sending three men to cover Jones, and leaving guard Steve Hendrickson with the ball near the top of the key.
The ball banked off the backboard and through the hoop, giving Washington the 1972 Region North title with a 51-50 victory over Northern Nash.
It was the signature moment in the spectacular high school career of Hendrickson, who tonight, will have his name etched into stone as one of four new members being inducted into the Washington Walk of Fame.
