Mr. Eugene Speight Gray, 77, of Roper died Friday, October 31, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late John W. and Sadie Davenport Gray and was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Gray, Jr. and sister, Christine G. Thomas. Mr. Gray retired after 40 years as a bleach plant operator with Weyerhaeuser Corporation and was a member of Zion’s Chapel Church of Christ. He served on the Board of Directors of Roper Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of Perseverance Lodge No. 59, A.F. &A.M. and a US Air Force veteran with service in England.
His family includes his wife of 54 years, Alma Darlington Gray of Roper, N.C.; daughters, Elaine Vann Whitaker and husband John of Wenona, N.C. and Terri G. Luton and husband Scot of Roper, N.C.; sisters, Catherine G. Wise of Wilson, N.C., Doris G. Leary of Moncks Corner, S.C. and Peggy G. Furlough of Alexandria, Va.; brother, Mike D. Gray of Waynesboro, Va.; grandchildren, Erin Vann and Daniel Vann of Greenville, N.C., Matthew Luton and Kellie Luton of Roper, N.C.
Funeral service will be held Monday, November 3, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Zion’s Chapel Church of Christ, Roper with Mark Wilmoth officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday, November 2, 2008 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Maitland Memorial Chapel and other times at the residence. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to Zion’s Chapel Church of Christ. Arrangements are by Maitland Memorial Chapel, Plymouth.
