Mrs. Virgil Ward Stewart, age 86, formerly of 1307 Summit Avenue, died Saturday, November 8, 2008.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, November 10, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, Washington with burial to follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Stewart was born November 10, 1921 in Williamston. She was the daughter of the late James Herbert and Lucy Gurganus Ward. She was married to the late Washington Mayor A. Thomas Stewart. A graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, she taught for many years in the Washington City Schools, and later worked with her family business, Stewart’s Jewelry Store. She supported her husband during the many years that he served as mayor.
A Life Member of the First Presbyterian Church, she held various positions on the board, taught Sunday School, and was active in the Ladies’ Circle. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and she was a member of the Stratford Book Club and Ramblers Supper Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Stewart; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Robertson; niece, Harriet Goff and her husband, Warren; and nephew, Herbert Ward and his wife, Cinda.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Tommy Stewart; sisters, Ruth Griffin and Julie Johnson; and brother, Herbert Ward, Jr.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 1202 North Respess Street, Washington.
