Mr. James Warren Sawyer, 77, of 303 Winsette Circle, Plymouth, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Washington County Hospital in Plymouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hope Free Will Baptist Church with the Revs. Leonard Bowers and Tom Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Sawyer was born in Washington County on Aug. 23, 1931. He was the son of the late William Monroe and Lillian Hassell Sawyer. He was married to Lillian Cox Whitley Warren, who survives. He served as magistrate for the Second Judicial District, serving the counties of Washington, Hyde, Tyrrell, Martin and Beaufort from 1968 until his retirement. He was a retail merchant and associate of Horner Funeral Home and later Walker Funeral Home, assisting families of Washington and surrounding counties for 39 years. He was a member of Holly Neck Church of Christ and attended First Christian Church and most recently, Hope Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, William F. “Nookie” Whitley of Plymouth; one sister, Minnie Mae Comstock of Plymouth; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Louise Smith.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home-Horner Chapel, Plymouth, and other times at the home of his son, 214 Pettigrew Drive, Plymouth.
