Starkey P. Jernigan

Mr. Starkey Payton Jernigan, 93, a resident of 341 New Road, Colerain, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Elm Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Preston Jernigan officiating. Burial will follow in the Mizelle family cemetery on New Road.
Mr. Jernigan was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Bertie County. He was the son of the late George Paton and Melissa Elizabeth White Jernigan. He was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II and seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie J. Jernigan of Colerain; two daughters, Louise Jernigan of Colerain and Linda Eileen Elks of Grimesland; two sons, Ronald Jernigan and Paul Jernigan, both of Colerain; six sisters, Paline Robertson of Woodland, Nettie White, Ruby White and Virgie Mizelle, all of Windsor, Annie Mae Hill and Edna Jernigan, both of Colerain; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carlie Jernigan.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and other times at the home.
