John M. “Jack” Hird

Mr. John M. “Jack” Hird, age 75, a resident of 306 Alderson Rd. Washington, died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at his home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday, December 1, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church and will be conducted by Rev. Danny Allen and Rev. Susan Harrison. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mr. Hird was born in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada on December 18, 1932 to the late James C. and Averil Minerva Meek Hird. On November 19, 1960, he married Karen Estelle Ryty, who survives. He graduated from high school in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. He then went on to Michigan Tech where he received his degree in Geological Engineering. He was a Geological Engineer with PCS, formerly known as Texasgulf, from 1965 until his retirement in 1993. Jack became a US citizen in 1973. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Academy of Geological Engineering and Sciences, past president of the Golden Kiwanis, chairman of the Beaufort Co. Planning Board, past president of the East Carolina Engineers Club, and president of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in 1995.
Survivors include: his wife Karen Ryty Hird of the home; one son, John Steven Hird of Rock Port, Texas; two daughters, Suzanne Marie Hall and husband Scott of Washington, Julie Christine Cox and husband Tom of Greenville; one brother, Keith Hird of Kincardine, Ontario, Canada and five grandchildren: Cameron Hall, Chase Hall, Lena Rose Cox, Thomas Cox and Jack Cox. He was preceded in death by sisters Wanda and Ruth Hird.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Sunday, November 30, 2008 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home.
