Dr. Virginia G. Ayscue

Dr. Virginia Gaylord Ayscue, age 89, a resident of Washington, died Friday, November 28, 2008.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Dr. Michael Price. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Ayscue was born in the Terra Ceia Community on July 8, 1919, daughter of the late Columbus Gaylord and Janie Boyd Gaylord. She received her PhD from the UNC at Chapel Hill, her MA from ASU and her Bachelor’s degree from UNC at Greensboro. She taught English at Washington High School for 15 years. Dr. Ayscue also taught in Fairfax County, VA and was assistant professor of English at ECU. She retired following eight years in the Wilson Schools as supervisor of language teachers. Dr. Ayscue published articles and books and was listed in Who’s Who directories. She held positions on the local, district and state levels of English and Educational professional organizations. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority for 50 years.
Dr. Ayscue is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Bellar of Hickory, NC; her grandson, Michael Bellar of New York, NY, several cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends including Jane and Michael Alligood and Jesse “Buster” Hopkins.
The family invites her former students to serve as honorary pallbearers and sit as a group at the service.
Memorials may be made to Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Omega Chapter Scholarship Fund, c/o Treasurer, 112 Cedar Lane, Rosedale, Washington, NC 27889 or First Christian Church Pre-School Fund, 401 E. 2nd Street, Washington, NC 27889.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Paul Funeral Home, Washington.
