Local church congregations, marching bands, cheerleaders and civic organizations celebrated the holiday season Saturday morning during Washington’s Christmas parade.
The sidewalks of the downtown area were lined with spectators taking in the show, which has been organized in recent years by the Washington Kiwanis Club.
The parade resembled a celebration of youth, with children featured prominently on many of the entries. They represented local schools, church groups, Scout troops and dance schools.
Such a big turnout of youngsters is appropriate since the Kiwanis Club’s main focus is serving the children of the world.
According to club president Ty Carter, the Washington Kiwanis Club has worked diligently to provide opportunities for children in the Beaufort County area. Activities have included funding renovations at Camp Hardee Girl Scout Camp, providing scholarships for college-bound high school seniors, sponsoring youth league sports teams and assisting the local Boys &Girls Club.
A Christmas project of the club is a special youth fund implemented through the Beaufort County Department of Social Services.
