Panthers cruise past Knights

YEATESVILLE — After sturggling for the first eight minutes, Northside was finally able to shake Terra Ceia on Thursday evening thanks to a near flawless second quarter.
Northside used a 14-0 run at the start of the second quarter to turn a four-point lead at the end of the first into a 24-point halftime lead, and the Panthers rolled from there, doubling up the Knights, 78-39.
Northside outscored Terra Ceia 26-6 in the second quarter.
The Panthers’ speed and athleticism gave the Knights fits all evening. Northside forced Terra Ceia to turn the ball over 32 times. Many of those turnovers were converted into Panthers’ points.
Northside used a balance attack to run by Terra Ceia. The Panthers had 14 different players score on Thursday, with only Taylor Woolard netting double digits as he finished with a game-high 13 points.Damount Harvey and Kenneth Jenkins each added eight points for Northside (2-3), while Daykuan Mackey finished with seven.
Terra Ceia (1-8) was led Justin Lilley, who notched 11 points, while Kiam Boerema added seven.
Lady Panthers survive scare from Lady Knights
Northside’s girls varsity basketball team erased a three-point third quarter deficit with 13 unanswered points, and hung on late as Rochelle Davis hit a game sealing free throw with six seconds left to lift the Lady Panthers past the Lady Knights, 54-50 on Thursday evening.
Trailing 28-25 midway through the third period, Northside’s Elizabeth Harris and Davis combined for 11 straight points and Melinda Paniagua added the final basket during a 13-0 Panthers’ run to help Northside jump out to a 38-28 lead with 1:41 left in the third.
The Lady Knights clawed their way back into the contest, and closed the gap to 53-50 behind a combined 13 fourth quarter points from Jill and Mariah Van Essendelft.
But with six seconds left, Davis walked to the line, hitting the first of two free throws to clinch the Lady Panthers’ win.
Harris led Northside (4-3) with a game-high 20 points, while Paniagua had 11 and Davis added seven.
Mariah Van Essendelft paced Terra Ceia (2-7) with 16 points, while Katie Jackson added 10 and Jill Van Essendelft chipped in with nine.
Northside will return to the hardwood tonight as it hosts Columbia, while Terra Ceia will also play tonight as it travels to Wayne Country Day.
