Mrs. Dorothy Brooks “Miss Dot” Tankard

Mrs. Dorothy Vernon Brooks “Miss Dot” Tankard, age 94, a resident of King Street, Bath, passed away Friday December 12, 2008.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday December 14, 2008 at Bath Christian Church officiated by Rev. Curtis White. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Tankard was born November 5, 1914 in Franklin, Virginia to Braxton Arthur Brooks and Eunice Fleetwood Brooks. Her mother died when she was 22 months old. Her daddy later married her aunt, Ruth Fleetwood Brooks, and together they raised her.
Mrs. Tankard graduated from Franklin High School, Virginia in 1932 and then graduated from East Carolina Teachers’ College. She taught in Guideway, Belvoir, Grimesland and Bath. Most of her years were taught in Bath, NC inspiring first-graders. On December 21, 1941, she married William Edgar Tankard, Sr., who preceded her on November 18, 1970.
Mrs. Tankard was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was active in Bath Christian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for the adult class, a member of Circle # 2 and CWF as well. She was active in community drives. She was a member of Bath Colonial Book Club, Mental Health Association, a volunteer for Pinetown and Bath schools, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Alpha Omega Chapter and a member of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel (NCRSP). She enjoyed sharing her painting and poetry with family and friends.
Surviving are her son, William Edgar Tankard, Jr., her daughter, Eunice Tankard Robbins and her husband, Sammy, her grandchildren, Angela Robbins Sawyer and her husband, E.T. and William Samuel Robbins, III. She is also survived by her three great-grandchildren, Braxton, Samantha and Ashley Sawyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edgar Tankard, Sr., a baby sister, and two brothers, Braxton Brooks, Jr. and Leland Brooks.
The family received friends Saturday evening at Paul Funeral Home and will receive friends other times at the home located at 102 S. King Street, Bath.
