GREENVILLE — Mr. Mervin Earl Nickels, 76, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Church of Christ, Church St., Winterville. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Nickels was a native of Montevideo, Minn. He was the son of the late Murrell and Zelta Nickels. He served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was married to Fern B. Nickels, who survives. After his military service, he lived in Louisiana for a number of years, then moved to Pungo and later to Boiling Springs Lake. For the past two and a half years, he made his home near Greenville. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic and taught his trade in other countries while working for CAMECO. He was called into ministry in the 1960s in the Church of Christ. He pastored Boiling Springs Church of Christ and helped to start several diocese in eastern North Carolina.
Survivors include two daughters, Penny N. Austin of Greenville and Murrell N. Spencer of Swan Quarter; one son, Mervin Earl Nickels II of Almagoda, N.M.; one sister, Martha Mae Langley of Bernice, La.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville.
