Rev. Elton Leon Strickland, 74, a resident of 50 Riverside Road, Apt. 110, Washington, died Friday, January 9, 2009, at Beaufort County Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 12, 2009 in the Chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Pastor Thad Tankard and Charles Hamilton officiating. There will be a private burial at Pamlico Memorial Gardens at a later time. Richard Holleman, Alan Alligood, Sammy Johnson and George Wayne Jefferson, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour, Monday, January 12, 2009 at Hillside Funeral Service.
Rev. Strickland was born February 19, 1934 in Harnett County to Clarence Joseph and Nora Smith Strickland. He was a retired First United Methodist minister having served in the Western Conference.
Survivors include one biological daughter Karen Tetterton Jefferson and husband George of Washington; two sons Mark Kerr Strickland and Michael James Strickland of Belmont; one sister Shirley S. Holleman of Apex; one brother Cecil Strickland; two grandchildren George Wayne Jefferson, Jr. and Tonya J. Alligood and husband Alan of Elizabeth City and other “adopted” families and a special friend Olive Godley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister Tula S. Goodwin and two brothers Harvey and Waddell Strickland.
