Paintings inspired by state’s Native Americans

An exhibition of paintings inspired by the heritage of North Carolina’s Native Americans opens today at the Washington Civic Center Gallery.
Greer, who said he’s been drawing “ever since I could get to a wall with a crayon,” was inspired to begin painting Native American figures dressed in ceremonial regalia four or five years ago.
Greer’s interest deepened when a friend invited him to attend a Native American powwow.
Some of the pieces were painted from life, while others are purely the result of the artist’s imagination.
Greer became acquainted with the Beaufort County Arts Council in 1994, when he entered the organization’s annual Fine Arts Show and received a honorable mention award. His work has also been featured in other art shows, exhibitions and public and private collections throughout the state.
