Rufus Gilbert Richards, 90, of 2816 Lynnsburg Road, of the Sladesville Community, Scranton, N.C. died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Cross Creek Health Care Center, Swan Quarter.
Born in Sladesville, June 25, 1918, he was the son of the late John and Sarah Catherine Midyett Richards. He graduated from the former Sladesville High School, attended Louisburg College and spent his working years as a community merchant operating his own grocery store for 25 years. He was married to the late Estelle Baldree Richards who preceded him in death. He was an active and long time member of Epworth United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Sunday school. He was a member of the former Sladesville Ruritan Club and was currently a member of Sladesville Civic Club.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Epworth United Methodist Church. Pastor Valerie Ballance will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Annette R. Harris of Scranton; grandchildren, Eddie Bryant Harris, Jr. and wife, Julie of Pantego; Vicky H. Still and husband, Everett of Kings Mountain, Kimberly H. Rodriguez and husband, Louis of Matthews, N.C. ; grea-grandchildren, Kaitlyn E. Still, Isabella G. Rodriguez, Emma V. Still, Marlea Harris and Jenny Harris.
Mr. Richards was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie R. Harris and a sister, Thelma Richards Dunbar.
