Margaret Altman Mann

Margaret Altman Mann, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on February 4, 2009 at Springmoor in Raleigh. Margaret was born June 4, 1917, in Ridgeland, SC, and grew up in Gastonia, NC. She moved to Raleigh in 1934, and graduated in 1938 from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, where she studied to be a teacher. Margaret taught English at Green Hope High School and at Dallas (NC) High School, then became a feature writer for the NC News Bureau before her marriage. She was a homemaker, wife, and mother, and she managed real estate interests which became her lifelong career.
Margaret was the daughter of Landy Boyd Altman and Myrtle Porter Altman. She married Samuel Nicholson Mann on April 11, 1942, in Raleigh. They retired to Washington, NC in 1972, and he predeceased her in 1981. Margaret returned to Raleigh in 2004.
Margaret was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington. She enjoyed friendships and activities of the Episcopal Church Women in Raleigh and Washington, the Town and Country Garden Club in Raleigh, the O. Henry Book Club in Washington, and bridge clubs in both towns.
Margaret is survived by her son, Louis H. Mann of Raleigh; daughter Margaret M. Davis and husband, C. Ashley Davis, Jr. of Raleigh; granddaughter, Landy Boyd Davis and grandson, C. Ashley (Bo) Davis, III, both of Raleigh; her brothers, Landy Boyd Altman, Jr. and wife, Susie, of Gaithersburg, MD; and James A. Altman and wife, Lila, of Clinton, MS.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at The Church of The Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. The family will receive visitors in Shepherd’s Hall following the service. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of the Church of the Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 28024, Raleigh, NC 27611; The Children’s Home Society of NC, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415; or the Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615.
