Elizabeth “Betsy” B. Swanner, age 85, a former resident of Washington and most recently of Galloway Ridge, Pittsboro, NC, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery with Rev. Don Wiesner officiating.
Mrs. Swanner was born April 12, 1923 in Beaufort County. She was the daughter of the late William Augustus Blount and Mary Elizabeth Hill Blount. She was a 1944 graduate of St. Mary’s School in Raleigh and later was a member of the school faculty. She was married to John “Jack” MacDonald Swanner, who preceded her in death January 14, 1998. In 1973, after living approximately 20 years in the Washington, DC area, Betsy, Jack and family returned to live in Washington, NC. Betsy was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina, an organizer and founding member of the Stratford Book Club, and a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan S. Wetherald and husband, Jeffrey of Fayetteville, GA , and Elizabeth “Libby” S. Winstead and husband, Eddie of Sanford, NC; and five grandchildren, John W. Wetherald, Elizabeth J. Wetherald, Wm. Ross Wetherald, Eddie Winstead, IV, and Wm. Hill Winstead.
