Mrs. Arcada J. Harris

Mrs. Arcada Jackson “Katie” Harris, age 77, a resident of 1739 South Asbury Church Road, Washington, took Jesus by the hand and went to her heavenly home Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Beaufort County Medical Center. She fought a courageous battle with her illness but she never gave up.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, conducted by Kent Gurganus and Fred Wilson. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Harris was born in Beaufort County on June 18, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Johnnie Clyde Jackson and Arcada Alligood Jackson. On June 16, 1951, she married Harley Ray Harris, who preceded her in death, December 28, 1968. At age 38, she went back to school to get her licensed practical nurse degree. She retired as an L.P.N. nurse from Britthaven of Washington. She was known for her compassion for others and she spent much of her life taking care of her brothers and mother.
She was an active member of the Pinetown Church of Christ and truly loved her church family. She was also actively involved with the D.A.V.A. and Pinetown Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia K. Harris of Washington; her son, Robert Wayne Harris and his wife, Dawn, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her grandson, Stephen Ray Harris of Raleigh; and her sister, Katherine Hillman of Roanoke, Va.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by six brothers, Harold Jackson, Garland Jackson, James Jackson, Onward Jackson, Marvin Jackson, and Jason Jackson.
The family expresses their appreciation to all who showed love and provided medical care to her throughout her illness.
Memorials may be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center General Fund, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, N.C. 27889.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at her home, 1739 South Asbury Church Road, Washington.
