Mrs. Marie Baker Cox, 98, of Greenville, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Revs. Bill and Wanda Neely and Patricia Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Cox was born in Pitt County, the daughter of the late Henry and Bertha Vincent Baker. She attended Greenville High School. She was married to Walter L. Cox, who preceded her in death. She was the owner of Cox Floral Service, Inc., which was started in her home in the Cox Mill community on N.C. Highway 43. She organized the Greenville Florist Association and received awards for integrity and professionalism from Florist’s Transworld Delivery and the N.C. State Florist Association. She taught flower arranging classes at East Carolina University and the former Pitt Technical Institute. She served on numerous city boards and commissions, was a member of the city parking authority and charter member of the Greater Downtown Greenville Association. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church for 58 years and received an honorary life membership in the Presbyterian Church Women.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy C. Karsnak of Greenville; one son, Jerry Cox of Greenville; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Walter L. Cox Jr. and James Ray Cox; one daughter, Jean Cox Jones; two brothers, Clayton Baker and Woodrow Baker and three sisters, Myrtle Buck, Helen Baldree and Alberta Moore.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville, and other times at the home.
