William “Puddin” Phelps

Mr. William “Puddin” Phelps, 75, of 1155 Pudding Lane, Creswell, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Creswell, with the Rev. Hearlen M. Trotman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Phelps was born in Creswell on May 30, 1933. He was the son of the late Dempsey Johnson and Johnnie Mae Phelps. He was married to Emma Halsey Phelps, who survives. He was retired from Holton’s Logging Company. He was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, Dexter R. Phelps of Greenville, Belinda P. Ferguson and Miranda P. Davis, both of Bunn, Jerome Phelps of Creswell, Debbie P. Cooper and Kelvin A. Phelps, both of Plymouth, and Vernice Bailey of Windsor; two brothers, L.J. Phelps of East Orange, N.J., and Sylvester Phelps of Hyattsville, Md.; one sister, Susie Horton of Silver Springs, Md.; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three children, Paul Harris, William Phelps Jr. and Genial Norman, and one brother, James R. Phelps.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Creswell.
