Mr. Gerald A. DeJong, age 79, a resident of 99 Hope Road, Bath, died Thursday April 16, 2009 at Craven Regional Medical Center.
Private memorial services will be Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and will be conducted by Derik Davis.
Mr. DeJong was born in Worcester County, Massachusetts on May 31, 1929 to the late Albert and Tillie Miedema DeJong. On January 17, 1947 he married Charlotte Faye Vincent who survives. He was a disabled veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army. He worked in construction most of his life and was also caretaker of Camp Leach for many years until the closure of the camp. Mr. DeJong was a member of the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and served as deacon.
Survivors include his wife Charlotte V. DeJong, three sons, Gary DeJong and wife Nina of Pinetown, Jeffry DeJong and wife Gail of Spencer, Massachusetts, Craig DeJong of Leicester, Massachusetts, two daughters, Cheralyn Moore and husband Muriel of Bath, Geralyn Guyette and husband Raymond of Haysville, NC, three brothers, Donald DeJong, Allard DeJong, John DeJong, three sisters, Trena DeJong, Phyllis Schouler, Gertrude Vanderburg, twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Myers.
The family will receive friends at the home of Gary and Nina DeJong, 39 Deerfield Lane, Pinetown, NC 27865.
