Mrs. Mildred Leggett Griffin, age 87, a resident of the Old Ford Community, Washington, NC died Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2009.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday May 9, 2009 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by Eddie Bowen. Burial will follow in Tice Cemetery.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Thomas Daniels, Daniel Smith, Adam Bunch, Ridge Hodges, Mike Taylor and Mike Hodges. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Gorham, Rusty Roberson, and Dr. William Jackson.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Beaufort County on October 24, 1921, daughter of the late Hugh Bonner Leggett and Lucy Perry Leggett. She was a homemaker, a member of Old Ford Church of Christ and Circle # 1 and former member of the Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Griffin loved to garden and “can” her own fruits and vegetables.
On October 10, 1941, she married James William Manning who was killed in World War II on April 11, 1945. She later married Archie Benjamin Griffin on January 2, 1947 who preceded her in death on June 25, 1978.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her children: Patsy M. Harris and her husband, Bobby; Steve L. Griffin and his wife, Pam and Shelia G. Moore and her husband, Larry all of Washington and Benny C. “Joby” Griffin and his wife, Carolyn of Williamston; her sisters: Mary Ella Daniels and Dorothy Griffin of Williamston and Becky Brown of Atlantic Beach; her grandchildren: William Robert Harris of Seattle, WA, Michelle Taylor and her husband, Mike of Williamston; Dawn Bunch and her husband, Adam of Edenton; Jamie Lyn Smith and her husband, Daniel of Chocowinity; Lauren Griffin Moore of Washington and Steven Archie Griffin of Washington. She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Holden Chase Taylor; Ava Caroline Bunch and Hudson Wrenn Smith. She was also great grandmother of the Taylor Sextuplets: Jordan Michael, Hunter Curtis, Cassandra Hope, Morgan Grace, Faith Elizabeth and Griffin Jamison Taylor, who died at birth. She is preceded in death by four brothers: Hugh Clyde Leggett, Lee Leggett, Johnny Leggett, and Jack Leggett, and three sisters, Pearl Hubbard, Carrie Hodges and Mae Roberson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday May 8, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home of her daughter, Shelia Moore, 403 Blount Place, Washington, NC 27889.
