Mrs. June Dele West Daniels, age 69, of Phoenix died on May 3, 2009 at her home.
A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday May 11, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Roy Lester.
A Phoenix native, June will be missed for many reasons, but one quality that comes first to mind was her abundant “Southern hospitality.” She married William “Bud” Daniels of North Carolina in 1960 and embraced this welcoming attitude. Every event at June’s started with a big hug and invitation to sit and stay. Second or third helpings of her cooking were impossible to resist. When a guest was about to leave, she would protest as she wrapped leftovers to send along. June was born on January 29, 1940, to Paul and Samantha (Clifton) West. As a girl, her interests included the youth group at West Phoenix Church of Christ, where she also met her future husband. After graduating from Camelback High School in 1958, she received her undergraduate degree in education from Arizona State University, and a master’s degree in education from Northern Arizona University. June taught special education for the Scottsdale Unified School District until she retired in 2003. Her devotion to her students was legendary within the family. She spent countless hours beyond the school day preparing her classroom, working with students, and creating special celebrations. For many years she roasted and stuffed Cornish game hens for her students at Thanksgiving. Fellow teachers, classroom aides, and former students became lifelong friends. June cherished her sorority sisters from Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators. She was an active member of a church she loved, Lincoln Heights Christian Church. Above all else, her family came first in her heart: As a child, she loved listening to the adults tell family stories. She gave ongoing care and companionship to her mother. And for the past 13 years, her grandchildren have been the joy at the center of her life. She is survived by her son, Jim (Rebecca) of Phoenix; four grandchildren; her mother; and her brother, Ray (Kathy) West of Pheba, Mississippi. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bud, and her father.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday May 10, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
