Mrs. Karen Ryty Hird, age 73, a resident of 306 Alderson Road, Washington, NC died Tuesday June 16, 2009 at her home.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church of Washington officiated by Rev. Danny Allen. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Earl Bonner, Carl Bonner, Cameron Hall, Chase Hall, Sean Weaver and Tim Copeland will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Hird was born in Hancock, MI on June 25, 1935 daughter of the late George Bernard Ryty and the late Aili Jampsa Ryty. She was a graduate of Hancock Central High School and continued her education at the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Mrs. Hird worked as a secretary at Michigan Tech. where she met the love of her life, John Jack Hird, who she married on November 19, 1960. Mr. Hird preceded her in death on November 29, 2008. Mrs. Hird also was a secretary for the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, MN. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Washington and was a volunteer with the Beaufort County Medical Center.
Survivors include a son: John Steven Hird of Rock Port, TX; two daughters: Suzanne Marie Hall and her husband, Scott, of Washington and Julie Christine Cox of Washington; a sister: Elaine Meyers and her husband Jim of Coon Rapids, MN and five grandchildren: Cameron Hall, Chase Hall, Lena Rose Cox, Thomas Cox and Jack Cox.
The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday June 19, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimers Association, Eastern NC Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605.
The Hird family would like to thank Asera Care Hospice and Golden Way Home Health for their compassionate care shown not only to Mrs. Hird, but to the entire family.
