Samuel “Papi” David Handler-Jones

Samuel David Handler-Jones, 25, of Washington, N.C., died at 2:45 a.m., Sunday, June 28, 2009, from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 33 in Beaufort County, N.C. He was born September 9, 1983 in New York City and later relocated to Washington, N.C. with his mother. He is the son of the late Evangelist Margaret Earl Jones and the late David Handler. Sam was often referred to as “Papi” by his late mother, whom he remained faithfully by her bedside until her passing. He attended Beaufort County Schools where he was a member of the P.S. Jones Middle School Demons band as a drummer. He was also a former member of Sutton Tabernacle and in recent years attended The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church in Washington, N.C. Sam had a genuine love for people and took pleasure in spending time with his son, family, and friends. Sam will be remembered as a loving son and a devoted father.
Sam is survived by his son, Shamar Daveion Jones and his girlfriend, Crystal Clemmons of Washington; four brothers, Clarence V. Jones of Manhattan, New York, Eric Jones and Jamel Campbell of New York, and Tyree L. Moore Jr. of the home; one sister, Katrina D. Moore and a god-sister, La’Tanya M. Gorham of Washington; three aunts, Evangelist Joyce M. Moseley (John) of Chocowinity, N.C., Carolyn R. Jones of Greenville, N.C., Ollie Spring of Brooklyn, N.Y., and one special aunt, Eldress Tina L. Moore (Tyree) of Washington; two uncles, Deacon Tyree L. Moore Sr. and Elder John Moseley; one nephew, Clarence Jones Jr.; special cousins, Pastor Kenneth and Angela Battle of Greenville, Marlo Cannon, Monique Cannon, and Ross Barrow of Washington; devoted friends, Johnathan Hopkins, Minister Ester Wright, Mother Mary Brooks; and a host of other cousins, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret E. Jones and his father, David Handler.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Whitfield &Whitley Funeral Home in Washington, N.C. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 8th at 1 p.m. at The Temple of Jesus Christ United Church located at 906 W. 8th St., Washington, N.C. Visitation is at the funeral home and other times at 385 Linda Drive, Rivercreek in Beaufort County. Burial will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Washington NC 27889 following the funeral service.
Sam was a kind-hearted and gentle soul, who loved a good joke. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. “We will never forget you, Sam. Be at peace.”
