Strong start for Washington All-Stars|12U softball, 15U baseball earn wins

The Washington 12 Babe Ruth softball squad got off to a successful start at the Southeast Regional in Varina, Va., on Thursday, taking both games on their slate.
The all-stars opened up the tournament with a close 5-4 win over Marshall County (Tenn.) at 10 a.m. With the win, the team advanced to the winner’s bracket, where it faced Madison (N.C.) at 4 p.m. Washington walloped the WNC champions 14-1 to move on in the tournament. The team squares off against Warren County (Va.) at 2 p.m. today.
In the first game of the tournament, Washington got a dominating pitching performance from Hailey Hutchens, who logged five strikeouts in the win.
Washington was led on offense by Kelsey Lang (3-3, 2B), Kaylee Jackson (2-3), Adrianna Tyson (1-3), Katie Dority (1-2) and Hailey Wright (1-2).
The team’s second game of the day was all about Lang, who threw a two-hitter in the win over Madison with four strikeouts. At the plate, she went 3-for-3 with three doubles.
Other standout performers on offense included Tyson (3-3, 2B), Wright (1-2, 3B), Dority (2-3) and Harley Hudson (1-2, 2B).
15U baseball
CHATHAM CO. — The 15U Washington baseball team opened state tournament play with an 18-5 win over Henderson-Vance.
Will Swain fanned two and allowed five hits while getting the win. Gage Tyson fanned one in one inning of relief.
Washington jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning and used a big six-run third to grab a 11-3 lead. A five-run sixth gave the All-Stars a little more cushion.
Tyler Waters (3-5) led the offense with a pair of doubles while driving in six runs. Ryan Hardison was 3-3 with two RBIs. Other top hitters for Washington were Swain (2-3, 2 RBIs), Tyson (2-4, 2B, RBI), Avery Woolard (1-1, RBI), Austin Mitchell (1-3), Johnny Broadway (1-4, 2B) and Will Masteon (1-5, 2B, 2 RBIs).
Washington plays at 1:30 p.m. today against Chatham County or Roanoke Rapids.
