Washington netters open with victory|Doubles teams comes up big

Thanks to a sweep in doubles play, the Washington Pam Pack tennis team won its season opener, 6-3, over Northeastern on a scorching Wednesday afternoon.
Beth Batchelor posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Leanne Owens at No. 1 singles, Hayley Stowe cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 nod at No. 2 singles and D’Lorah Pierce earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.
Batchelor-Stowe won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, Janie Page-Tierra Locklear posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and Shannon Niederhauser-Mary Margaret Fowle won 9-8 (7-5) at No. 3 doubles.
“I think it’s great to get that first win of the season,” Washington coach Michelle Elks said. “We had some nerves out there that we’ll have to figure out how to keep that in check.”
In other singles action, Northeastern’s Catilin Godfrey beat Page 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Leighann Pfeiffer topped Locklear 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 and Mariam Cooper defeated Fowle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.
The doubles tandems pulled through for Washington.
“I was very impressed with the doubles today,” Elks said. “It was a huge win and it will build some confidence.”
The Pack returns to the court for an away match today at Currituck. Washington is back home Tuesday against West Carteret.
