Dorothy Paul “Dot” Carawan, age 90, a resident of the Vintage Inn, Williamston and formerly of 612 Small Street, Washington Park, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009.
A graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 10:00 AM. The family will receive friends following the service at the Gathering Area of the First Christian Church in Washington from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Dot was born August 22, 1919, daughter of the late Evelyn Stotesbury Paul and Lewis Bonner Paul in the Beaufort County community of Pike Road. She moved with her family to Washington, N.C. in 1925. Dot was the baby of the family of six siblings-Bryan, Isolyn (Ike), Hazel, Olive, Mildred and Bonner. She graduated from Washington High School. Following graduation, Dot worked for Western Union, receiving no salary until her employers had sufficient funds to pay her.
On December 27, 1941, Dot married Columbus Herman Carawan who preceded her in death in 1988. Following her marriage, she worked at Sears Roebuck as assistant manager for 32 years. In her retirement years, she helped care for her sisters by driving them to their doctors’ appointments, to the grocery store, and to their appointments at the beauty salon. Dot had a great sense of humor, laughed loudly and often, enjoyed her life full of challenges and was a kind, caring, friend to many. She had beautiful, curly, thick hair and a head full of wisdom. Dot loved to keep up with “the news,” a throwback to her years with Western Union. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington.
Dot is survived by five nephews, William Bonner Dunn, Philip Michael Willis, Ira Bryan Paul, Jr., Joseph Bonner Paul, Jr., Roy Carawan, Jr. and one niece, Ava Paul Moon. She is also survived by her sister in law, Lillian Paul, great nieces and nephews and special friends Phoebe Mills, Lexa Upton, Vivian Fisher, and the staff of the Vintage Inn.
Preceding her in death in addition to her husband, were her six siblings, Bryan Paul, Isolyn (Ike) Jarvis, Hazel Claude, Olive Willis, Mildred Dunn and Bonner Paul and one nephew, Paul Lewis Dunn.
