Chester Vincent Saunders, Sr., 73, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City, NC. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, on July 24, 1936 to the late William Dempsey Saunders and Margaret “Maggie” Palmer Saunders. He was a member of City Road United Methodist Church, and the Collier Sunday School Class, a retired member of the Weeksville Volunteer Fire Department, and was a retired self-employed accountant.
Mr. Saunders was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Addie Watkins Saunders; a daughter, Vicki S. Etheridge and husband Tim of Greenville, NC; a son, Chester Vincent Saunders, Jr. and wife Carol of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren, Randall Etheridge, Kristen Etheridge, and Dawn Saunders; two sisters, Rosalyn S. Featherston of Tulsa, OK and Kathleen S. Rhodes of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Clinton Saunders and wife Janet of Elizabeth City, NC. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Moore and Ruth Gardner and four brothers, Dorsey, Julian, Charles, and Wilford Saunders.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. at City Road United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Burial will take place in the New Hollywood Cemetery. Following the church service the family will greet friends and relatives in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to City Road United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 535, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0535 or a charity of one’s choice.
