Mr. Charles Frederick Latham, Sr., age 86, a resident of 134 East Water Street, Belhaven, NC died Sunday September 6, 2009 at the Pungo District Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday September 8, 2009 at First Christian Church of Belhaven officiated by Pastor Steve Green and Mike Isbell. Burial will follow in Belhaven Community Cemetery with flag presentation by Belhaven Boy Scout Troop #80.
Mr. Latham was born in Beaufort County on December 18, 1922 son of the late Harry Vann Latham, Sr. and the late Sarah Respess Latham. He was a 1939 graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School and served his country in the U.S. Army. He married the former Ann Cuthrell who survives. Mr. Latham worked in the hardware business for sixty years and was owner-operator of C. F. Latham Company in Belhaven. He was instrumental in the development of the Belhaven Museum. Mr. Latham was a member of the First Christian Church of Belhaven and active in all phases of the church. He was the 1979 recipient of the Belhaven Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and was active in several civic organizations including former scout master with Belhaven Boy Scout Troop # 80.
Surviving along with his wife Ann of the home are a son: C. F. “Chuck” Latham, Jr. of Belhaven; a daughter: Karen “Tootie” Latham Lanier of Belhaven; a daughter-in-law: Rebecca “Becky” Latham of Belhaven; a brother: Jonathan Latham of Washington; a sister: Ann Latham Rouse of Washington; five grandchildren: April Latham Morris and her husband Mike of Apex, Mitchell Latham and his wife Erica of Elizabethton, TN, Rachel Latham of Belhaven, Austin Latham of Belhaven and Joanna Latham of Belhaven and two great grandchildren: Jacob Charles Morris and Meredith Morris both of Apex. Mr. Latham was preceded in death by a son: Seth David Latham on April 13, 2009, a brother: Harry Vann Latham, Jr. and a sister: Jane Latham Dilday.
The family will receive friends 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM Tuesday September 8, 2009 at First Christian Church and at other times at the home.
