Mr. Robert Ernest Matthews, age 85, a resident of 653 Everett Road, Washington, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at his residence.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church with Brother Bill Mobley officiating. Burial will follow in the Latham Cemetery. Frankie Brown, Dallas Foreman, Jr., Dennis John Foreman, Jason Foreman, Steve Hahn, Timothy Lagcher, Del Latham and Robby Wooster will serve as pallbearers. Charles Latham and Tobie Wallace will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m., Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church.
Mr. Matthews was born in Suffolk, VA July 18, 1924 to Willie G. and Susie Costen Matthews who preceded him in death. Ernest worked as a foreman for Brown and Root Construction Company and was known as a master carpenter. He served his country in the Army during WWII. Ernest was a member of Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Sally Parrish Matthews he is survived by two sons, Danny M. Foreman and wife Marilyn of Belhaven and Stephen F. Hahn Matthews of Chocowinity; two daughters, Katherine Matthews Wooster and husband Robert of Tabor City and Ginger F. Lagcher and husband Raymond of Pinetown; two brothers, Edward Matthews and Riddick Matthews of Suffolk, VA; one sister, Janice Grover of Conyers, GA; two brothers-in-law, Del Latham and wife Kay of Washington and Jimmy Latham and wife Margaret of Orange Park, FL; grandchildren, Robert V. Wooster, Jr., Kristin Wooster May, Timothy Lagcher, Stephanie Woolard, Christine Lecompte, Angela Raney, Dennis John Foreman, Jason Foreman, Tabitha Foreman, Nicholas Foreman and Steven Adams; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death in 1978 by his first wife Catherine Latham Mathews; one son, Lee M. Foreman; two brothers, Alton Matthews and Willie Jr. Matthews; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Hayden and Lillian Stubbs.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church Youth Fund, 7099 North Boyd Road, Pinetown, NC 27865.
