CHOCOWINITY — The magic ran out on Southside Friday as the school saw its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Four Rivers Conference-leading Manteo Redskins, as they fell 41-12.
The underdog Seahawks (3-3, 1-1), which hadn’t won three games in the last two years combined, gave Manteo (6-0, 2-0) a good run. However, the Redskins continued to show why they are tops in the conference as they out-rushed Southside 359-131.
Southside coach David Hines said he was happy with the play of his team, despite the outcome.
“People are going to see the score all over and say ‘Well, that was expected,’ but I really hope they look closer. At one point (in the second half) it was 20-6,” Hines said. “We were in the ball game the whole game. We took their best shot, they took their best shot and they just came out on top.”
The Redskins’ trio of running backs was too much for the Seahawks as C.J. Bailey, Jar’Reeze McClease and Desmond McMurran gashed the Southside defense for big plays.
Manteo took an 8-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter when it completed a 68-yard drive with a 31-yard TD dash by McClease. The fullback busted right through the middle of the Seahawks’ defense for the score.
The Redskins expanded their lead in the second when they strung together another impressive drive that was highlighted by a Trey Govan 33-yard run that helped set up a Wes Carmichael 1-yard touchdown plunge.
The score gave Manteo a 14-0 advantage.
The score would stay that way all the way up until the third quarter. However, it didn’t take long for Manteo to build on its lead.
The Redskins bolted down the field on their opening possession. A few big runs by Bailey led to the back eventually scoring on a 3-yard dash to make it a 20-6 ball game with nearly 10 minutes left in the quarter.
The Seahawks finally got on the boar midway through the quarter when quarterback Terrill Moore fired a perfectly placed pass down the right sideline to Willie Ruffin to make cut the lead to 20-6.
The Seahawks would not score again until the fourth quarter when Moore would score from 1-yard out to shrink the Skins lead to 34-12.
