Charlie Jackson “Jack” Burbage, Sr., 86, of Belhaven passed away Friday, October 16, 2009, at University Health Systems, Inpatient Hospice Center, in Greenville, NC. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009, at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven. Burial will follow at St. Clair’s Church of Christ cemetery in Bath, NC. John Ormond will officiate.
The family will receive friends between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2009, at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven.
Born on June 12, 1923, in the Sidney community of Beaufort County, NC, he was the son of John Walter and Musa Mason Burbage. Mr. Burbage was a 1940 graduate of Bath High School in Bath, NC, and a member of West Belhaven Church of Christ. During the early 1940s, he served as a “CCC boy” (Civilian Conservation Corps). Mr. Burbage was the owner of a dirt hauling/landscaping business, and throughout his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Meredith Burbage, of the home; a son, Jay Burbage, and his wife, Lynn, of Wilson, NC; two granddaughters, Allison and Rebecca Burbage of Wilson, NC; a sister-in-law, Bette Burbage, of Sonoma, CA; a sister-in-law, Joan Bowden Sheppard, of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister-in-law, Edith Bowden Rice, and husband, Rudolph, of Virginia Beach, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Burbage was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John W. Burbage, Jr.; his baby sister, Frances Burbage; his half-brothers, Ottis, Lemmie, and Rufus Burbage; and his half-sisters, Annie Burbage Paul, Russell Burbage Williams, and Hazel Burbage Woolard.
Mr. Burbage’s pallbearers will be his nephews, Jeff Sheppard, Rue Rice, Wilson Paul, Andrew Paul, Lee Paul, and Richard Paul. Honorary pallbearers are Rudolph and Idar Poole, Joe and Nancy Cooper, Burl and Willene Brinn, Diane Sawyer, Mary Gibbs, Glenwood Smith, and Herbert Lee Poole.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the love and concern shown by the community during the past several months, and they would like to especially thank Burl Brinn, Nancy Cooper, and the in-home and inpatient hospice staff members for being so attentive to Mr. Burbage’s needs during his illness.
