Mr. Joseph Lee “Joe” Hollowell, age 74, a resident of 575 Pearl Street, Aurora, NC died Tuesday November 17, 2009 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday November 19, 2009 at Aurora United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Timothy Ware and Rev. George Jones. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Joe’s grandsons: Ryan Williams, Michael Williams, Patrick Williams and Wilson McBryde; nephew: Lloyd Hollowell and friend Donald Bennett will serve as pallbearers.
Joe was born in Beaufort County on December 15, 1934 son of the late Grover Cleveland Hollowell and the late Palistine Swain Hollowell. He was a 1953 graduate of Aurora High School and attended UNC Chapel Hill. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He married the former Lou Poore on May 28, 1966 who survives. He was president and owner of Aurora Industrial Supply Inc., a member of the Beaufort County ABC Board for twenty six years which he was chairman at his declining health, a member of the Aurora Town Board for ten years, a charter member of the Aurora Lions and Aurora J.C’s, a member of the Aurora VFW Post 9492 and a member of Aurora United Methodist Church. The Beaufort County Commissioners just recently passed a resolution for his honorable service to Beaufort County. He was an entrepreneur, starting many businesses that not only benefited his family but his community as well.
Joe is survived by his wife Lou of the home; a son: Clifton E. Williams, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Aurora; two daughters: Sally Williams Burke and her husband Ken Dean of Cary and Christy Williams McBryde and her husband Van of Kinston; a sister: Sallie Brantley of Aurora; two brothers: Nathan Hollowell of Eure, NC and Charles Hollowell of Aurora; six grandchildren: Stacy Rowe Brooks, Ryan Williams, Michael Williams, Patrick Williams, Lauren Gray and Wilson McBryde; two great grandchildren: Alexis Brooks and Bryson Brooks. Joe was preceded in death by two sisters: Mildred Stilley and Virginia Bennett and three brothers: William Hollowell, Grover Hollowell and Benjamin Hollowell.
The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery and at other times at the home.
