Ralph H. Hodges

Ralph Hinton Hodges, Jr., 88, affectionately known as “Big Daddy,” died Friday, December 18, 2009 in Nags Head. Born in Washington, NC, he was the son of the late Ralph Hinton Hodges and Maude Swindell Hodges and was the widower of Peggy Shaffer Hodges. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Hodges Moore and Margaret Hodges Hackney.
Mr. Hodges is survived by a daughter, Lou Hodges Cleaver and husband Eric of Manteo; a son, Ralph Hinton Hodges, III and wife Gail of Kitty Hawk; and three grandchildren, John Eric Cleaver, Jr., Ralph Hodges Cleaver, and Lauren Nicole Rutherford.
He was a graduate of Washington High School at age 15. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of The Phi Gamma Fraternity. He graduated from the Baltimore School of Business. He proudly served his country in World War II in the Air Force and retired as a major. He was a former president of Seaboard Savings and Loan, which later became Cooperative Bank. He was a member of St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church and a former member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington, NC.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Green and the Rev. Charles Gill officiating. A reception will be held following the remembrance in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
