RALEIGH — Williamston High School senior Katie Paschal capped off her prep basketball career in style, as she was named to The Associated Press All-State team.
Paschal, who led the Tigers to a 29-1 record and a runner-up finish in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A state playoffs, was a second team member last year. She was also named to the NCPreps.com All-State team.
Paschal finished her career with 3,150 points, ranking second in North Carolina girls basketball history.
The senior averaged 33.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.6 steals, 5.0 assists and 1.6 blocks per game.
Paschall will play at East Carolina next season.
Kinston’s Reggie Bullock and Matthews Butler’s Cierra Burdick were unanimous picks to The Associated Press All-State prep basketball teams for North Carolina.
Bullock and Burdick were selected on all 22 ballots submitted by sports writers from across the state in results released Wednesday. Bullock, a North Carolina signee and McDonald’s All-American, led his team to a state championship before making the AP men’s team for the third straight season as a senior.
Burdick, a junior, averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds while leading Butler to a state championship. She has committed to play for Pat Summitt at Tennessee.
In addition, Greensboro Dudley’s P.J. Hairston and Gastonia Forestview’s Shannon Smith each came within a vote of being unanimous picks to the men’s and women’s teams, respectively.
The AP revised the selection process this year, doing away with its first and second teams in favor of a single 12-player squad for both the men and women.
On the men’s team, the 6-foot-7 Bullock averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Hairston — a junior who has committed to North Carolina — averaged 27 points and eight rebounds per game. West Charlotte’s J.T. Terrell, a first-team AP All-State pick last year and a Wake Forest signee, earned 20 votes after averaging 31.5 points per game.
Charlotte United Faith senior Ian Miller and Kernersville McGuinness senior Aaron Toomey also returned to the AP team for a second straight season; both were second-team picks last year.
The rest of the men’s team included: Raleigh Word of God senior C.J. Leslie, Concord Cannon senior Jarell Eddie, Rocky Mount senior Tashawn Mabry, Cherryville junior Terry Whisnant, Lake Norman senior Paul Larsen, Southwest Onslow senior Jamaal Williams, Oak Ridge Military senior Jay Canty, Forsyth Country Day sophomore Tyler Lewis and Raleigh Enloe senior Melvin Tabb.
Canty, Lewis and Tabb each earned seven votes to tie for the final spot on the men’s team.
On the women’s team, Smith — who has signed with North Carolina — averaged 23 points and seven assists per game to return to the AP team after being a first-team pick last season. Kernersville McGuinness junior Megan Buckland earned 20 votes who averaged nearly 20 points and eight rebounds per game.
Williamston senior Katie Paschal, who will graduate as one of the state’s all-time leading scorers with more than 3,000 career points, returned to the All-State team after being a second-team selection last year.
The rest of the women’s team included: South Central Pitt junior Danielle Butts, East Bladen junior Courtney Melvin, Morrisville Green Hope sophomore Kristen Gaffney, East Lincoln senior Lindsy Wright, East Mecklenburg senior Monet Tellier, Charlotte Providence Day sophomore Tiffany Mitchell, Salisbury senior Shanequa “Bubbles” Phifer and Charlotte Hickory Grove senior Chelsea Douglas.
