Stewart Edward Gibbs was born on June 21, 1941 to the late Fred and Nancy Gibbs of Engelhard, NC. He passed away on April 18, 2010 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.
He attended Engelhard High School and graduated in 1962. He began his career with the NC Forest Service in 1967. He retired in 2000 with 33 years of service. Stewart was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 294.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patricia Payne Gibbs of Fairfield. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Gibbs of Engelhard, and one sister, Alma Gibbs of Engelhard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Gibbs and Joseph Gibbs, and three sisters, Doris Gibbs Meekins, Olive Gibbs, and Christine Gibbs Williams. He is survived by one brother-in-law Steven Payne, and one sister-in-law Beadie Payne Gibbs. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Although he had no children, Stewart was instrumental in raising some of his nieces and nephews. They are: Jennifer Gibbs Sadler and her husband Michael, Christal Gibbs and her fiancé Ronnie, Joseph Payne, Michael Dean Sadler and his fiancé Lindsey, and Jenna Sadler. And lastly, his special Buddy, Gizmo.
Funeral services will be held at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ in Fairfield, where Stewart was a member, on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 4 p.m., with Russ Smith and Doug Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow at Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard with full Masonic Rites. Randy Privett, Jay Eakes, David Eakes, Brock Eakes, Marcus Gibbs, Matthew Gibbs, and Scott Gibbs will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
