Maynard Charles Hamblin, a Washington resident and formerly of Palm Beach County, FL, died suddenly at home in Washington on April 20, 2010.
Maynard was born to the late Lester M. Hamblin and Una Grace Gum Hamblin, October 21, 1930, in West Palm Beach, FL. He graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1948, and earned a BS in building construction from the University of Florida in 1953.
Before retiring from careers as a real-estate broker and architectural administrator, Maynard served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. While stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, Maynard met and married his late wife, Gillian Crosbie Hamblin. In 1955, the couple moved to Lake Worth, FL, where their three children were born and grew up.
After Gill died, Maynard moved to Washington, NC, where he met and fell in love with Nancy McCauley. They were married in 2005.
Committed to the communities in which he lived, Maynard served on the vestries of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Palm Beach, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Washington, NC. He was a member of the Committee of 100, served on the boards of DWOW, Citizens for Revitalization and Friends of the Brown Library. He also volunteered at the NC Estuarium. He served as chair of the Board of Trustees of Palm Beach Community College. He was a long-time member of Lake Worth and West Palm Beach Rotary Clubs, and was past president of the Washington Evening Rotary Club. One of his greatest passions was his participation in the Episcopal Cursillo Movement.
Maynard will be remembered as an energetic man who worked hard at his many undertakings. He was focused, exact, respectful, athletic, mannerly, moral, reflective, and spiritual. He spent many happy summers at his beloved NC mountain home, and delighted in time at the beach. He enjoyed traveling abroad with Nancy and friends in recent years. Above all else, he prized his family, friends, church and pets.
In addition to Nancy, Maynard is survived by three children and their spouses: Gillian Martha Hamblin and husband John Powell of Mebane, NC; Melissa Hamblin Goslin and husband David of Mexico City, Mexico; and Mark Crosbie Hamblin and wife Jan of Washington, NC. He also is survived by five grandchildren: Mark Jr., Christian and James Hamblin, and Sarah and Graham Goslin. Also surviving are Jessica McCauley Hammond and husband Charles; Coly McCauley and wife Tiffanie and their children Lydia and Cole. He also leaves behind cousins, nieces, nephews and an extended family of friends who will miss him deeply.
A celebration of Maynard’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2010, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Washington, NC, officiated by the Rev. Kevin Johnson.
Following the service, the family will receive friends at home at 118 West 12th Street, Washington.
