Eva Mae Hassell Alligood Singleton

Mrs. Eva Mae Hassell Alligood Singleton, 97, of Ridgewood Manor, died of natural causes on Friday, April 30, 2010. She was born March 15, 1913, in Beaufort County and grew up in the Woodard’s Pond community. Her parents were the late Joseph Spencer Hassell and Dora Roberson Hassell.
Mrs. Singleton graduated from Bath High School in 1930 and attended Atlantic Christian College. She married Frederick Marvin Alligood on May 2, 1938, who died on June 19, 1973. She married John Henry Singleton on May 26, 1979, who died on January 4, 1999.
She had been a member of Asbury United Methodist Church since 1942 and attended as long as her health permitted. She was involved with the Woman’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and the Elizabeth Circle. She was choir director for 20 years and taught adult Sunday school. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. As a resident of Ridgewood Manor, she taught an adult Sunday school class and directed the center choir.
She is survived by her children Frederick Marvin Alligood, Jr. and his wife, Mary of Midlothian, VA; Patricia Alligood Hill and her husband, Edward of Washington; and Mae Alligood Monroe and her husband Harold of Chesapeake, VA. She is survived by seven grandchildren: Anne Alligood Bryson, Carter Alligood, Jeremy Hill, Laura Hill Kucera, Andrew Hill, Ryan Monroe, Lauren Monroe Culler and 16 great grandchildren.
She is survived by her stepchildren: Graham Singleton of Garner, N.C. and Judy Singleton Bethard of Carmel, TN; as well as six stepgrandchildren and eight great-stepgrandchildren.
Mrs. Singleton was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward Hassell, Malcolm Hassell and Howard Hassell, all of Washington; her sisters, Annie Sasnett and Lydia Cox of Washington; her stepdaughter, Monnia Jay Woolard of Washington; sisters in law, Lilly Hassell, Elizabeth Hassell, Brownley Guthrie, and Louise Eborn, all of Washington, and Eva Berry Jones of Wilson, N.C.; nieces, Catherine Parvin of Goldsboro, N.C., Mary H. Van Dorp and Sybil Baker of Washington; nephews, Leslie Cox, Kenneth Cox, Raymond Jones, Joseph Hassell, James Hassell, Edward Hassell, Jr., Pender Sasnett and a great-niece, Lillian Claire Chason.
She is survived by nephews, Claude Sasnett of Kinston, N.C., Malcolm P. Hassell of Washington, and Alton Eborn of Nokesville, VA; nieces, Catherine Eborn Spencer of CA, Mary Lou E. Chandler of Washington, N.C., Linda Spears of Cary, N.C. and Jane Ruffin A. Carrow of Virginia Beach, VA.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carolyn Pilgrim officiating. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home in Washington.
