GREENVILLE — The East Carolina Pirates closed out their home portion of the 2010 softball season in style, taking both games of a doubleheader from the Elon Phoenix. ECU (36-16) won 1-0 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game.
Toni Paisley pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12 batters for the victory in the first game.
ECU scored the loan run of the game in the fourth inning. With one out, Charina Sumner and Kaui Tom hit consecutive doubles to put runners at second and third. Sumner raced home on an error.
That’s all Paisley would need.
Faith Sutton got the win in the second game. She held Elon to four hits and struck out six batters in the six-inning contest.
Marina Gusman-Brown powered the offense by driving in three runs. Her two-run single helped give the Pirates a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Her RBI-triple in the fifth made it 5-0. She later scored on a passed ball for a 6-0 advantage.
Vanessa Moreno (3-4, 3 runs), who scooted home on a passed fall in the fourth, hit an RBI double in the sixth. She later scored on Cristen Aona’s double to close out the scoring.
Nicole Jordan, a former standout at Jamesville, went 1-for-2 in the game.
The Pirates play at Memphis this weekend.
