Miss Tommye Nixon Dawson, a resident of 166 Washington Harbour, Washington, died Friday, May 14, 2010 at her home.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Father Kevin Johnson. John Peter Rascoe III, Braxton Bragg Dawson Rascoe, Francis Edward Nixon Rascoe, George Smedes York, Jr., Benjamin Jasper Forbes III, Braxton Bragg Dawson III, Braxton Bragg Dawson Rascoe, Jr. and Hunter Aaron Spivey Rascoe will serve as pallbearers.
Miss Dawson was born in Norfolk, VA on December 27, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Braxton Bragg Dawson and Edna Jones Nixon Dawson. Miss Dawson was a graduate of Washington High School. She made her debut into society at the NC Debutante Ball in 1957. Her education includes St. Catherines School in Richmond, VA, Sullins College in Bristol, VA, University of Georgia, Brenau College in Gainesville, GA where she became a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Miss Dawson then studied French at École Le Mania in Lausanne, Switzerland. She then moved to New York City and resided at Barbison Residence for Women where she was an interpreter for the United Nations. Miss Dawson was a secretary and officer of Coca Cola of Washington for a number of years. She was also a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church.
Miss Dawson is survived by a brother, Braxton Bragg Dawson, Jr. of Washington; a sister, Nancy Bragg Dawson Rascoe of Hertford; a brother in law, John Peter Rascoe, Jr. of Hertford; a sister in law, Susan Sherwood Dawson of Washington; six nephews, John Peter Rascoe III, Braxton Bragg Dawson Rascoe, Francis Edward Nixon Rascoe, Braxton Bragg Dawson III, George Smedes York, Jr., Benjamin Jasper Forbes III; five nieces, Sarah Parker Dawson York, Amanda Ashley Dawson Forbes, Gina Lee Stone Rascoe, Elizabeth Beale Joyner Rascoe, Diane Daniels Rascoe; four great nieces, Lucy Mae Holliday Rascoe, Katherine Granbery Rascoe, Elizabeth Joyner Rascoe, Julia Belle Dawson Forbes; five great nephews, Braxton Bragg Dawson Rascoe, Jr., Hunter Aaron Spivey Rascoe, Francis Edward Nixon Rascoe, Jr., George Smedes York III, William Bowen Nixon York; beloved caretakers, Sonia and David Carpenter, Glenda Windley, Keisha Carpenter, Vanessa Collins, Denaysia Carpenter and Evelyn Blount.
The family will receive friends at the home, 166 Washington Harbour, Washington.
