Frances Stell Spruill Chandler, of 1051 Albemarle Beach Road, died Friday, May 28, 2010 at her home. She was born in Washington County on March 2, 1928 to the late Moye Winfield and Frances Mary “Fannie Mae” Stell Spruill. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ben Cullus Chandler. She was a retired private piano teacher, and attended Roper Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
Frances graduated from high school at what was then Campbell College. An accomplished musician, she attended Meredith College, graduating with a degree in public school music in 1949. While at Campbell, Ben and Frances began dating and were married August 28, 1951.
During her life Frances taught music at Robersonville High School and went on to teach music in several Kindergartens in several states. In 1953, she started the first Kindergarten in Kernersville, NC at the Baptist Church.
Frances loved to travel, but she loved planning trips off the beaten path almost as much as the trips themselves. Frances traveled throughout the United States, visiting every state except Alaska and Washington. She loved traveling with her children and grandchildren and took each grandchild on a grand adventure for their 13th birthdays. She loved to have a good time.
Frances was an avid gardener and until the last few years would plant hundreds of flowers every spring.
Frances was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was so proud of her five grandsons. She loved her children, grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews who were like her own children. She could always be counted on to help anyone in need.
Her intelligence, wit, strength and character will be remembered by everyone who knew her. She found joy in the little things and had the ability to laugh at herself and during the adversities in her life.
