Mrs. Vera Gettys Oden, age 92, a resident of 15128 US Hwy 264 East, Pinetown died Monday May 31, 2010 at her home.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday June 3, 2010 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington officiated by the Rev. Curtis White. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Ted Baynor, Bill Scott Cutler, Al Cutler, Allen Holden, Jimmy Latham and Mike Gettys will serve as pallbearers. The Colonial Book Club of Bath, Ricky Woolard and Jerry Modlin will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Oden was born in Rutherford County on May 5, 1918 daughter of the late Mrs. Willie Gettys. She graduated from Hollis High School and Asheville Teachers’ College. Mrs. Oden married John H. Oden, Jr., who preceded her in death on November 30, 1991. Mrs. Oden was a teacher in Bath for 35 years. She was a member and former president of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the Colonial Book Club of Bath, a member of the Beaufort County Mental Health Association for many years, a member of the National Education Association and North Carolina Association of Educators. Mrs. Oden was an avid fan of the North Carolina Tarheels.
Mrs. Oden is survived by her children: Lynda Oden, Dale Oden and Karen Nethercutt and Betsy Oden Boxer and husband Mark, “other daughters”: Janice Sawyer Oden and Sherry Modlin, grandchildren: Stephen, Laura and John David Oden all of Hunter’s Bridge. In addition to her mother and husband, Mrs. Oden is preceded in death by a son: John H. Oden, III and a brother: Fred Gettys.
The family would like to offer a thank you to the special caregivers: Margaret Harris, Marie Boyd, Grace Sawyer and Sherry Modlin and dear friends: Eleanor Humphrey, Rachel Swindell, Myra Wingate and Ruth Waters.
The family will receive friends Wednesday June 2, 2010 from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home.
