Mrs. Joan Harrell Nicholls, age 76, a resident of 401 Oak Dr., Washington, NC passed away on June 16, 2010 at her home. The family will receive friends at Hillside Funeral Service on Friday, June 18, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at First Christian Church, 401 E. Second St, Washington, NC. Service will be officiated by Dr. Michael Price. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Nick Nicholls, Kyle Nicholls, James Nicholls, David Nicholls, Dustin Boseman, Isaiah Watson and Jeremy Watson.
Mrs. Nicholls was born in Beaufort County on December 23, 1933, daughter of the late James Matthew Harrell, Jr. and Annie Gibson Harrell. She was married to the late Jehu Nicholls who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Washington High School. She later attended Kings Business School. She owned and operated, along with her husband, One Hour Martinizing and J &J Sales. Mrs. Nicholls was a member of the First Christian Church of Washington, a past member of the Washington and Yacht Country Club, she was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, where she served as a secretary and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her two sons, Jehu Nicholls III and wife Laura of Washington and Kim Nicholls and wife Paula of Washington; two daughters, Joan Gayle Watson-Roper and husband James of Washington, and Vera Boseman and husband Reed of Bath; two brothers, James “Buddy” A. Harrell and wife Helen of Aurora and Gerald “Chip” Franklin Harrell of Kissimmee, FL; two sisters, Ophelia Dixon and husband Harvey of Washington and Peggy Woolard and husband Edgar of Palm Beach, FL.
